Environmental Sustainability

In the challenging, research-based pharmaceutical industry, we are committed to making high-quality medicines responsibly. We aim to achieve world-class performance by operating safely, minimising our natural resource use, and lessening our impact on the environment.

Lilly has made considerable progress in lessening our impact on the environment and was recognised as one of the first major pharmaceutical companies to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in 2009. By 2011, all our UK sites had met this level and received the award in recognition of their carbon management programmes. The Carbon Trust is an independent company in Britain that helps companies reduce carbon emissions in support of the 2008 United Kingdom Climate Change Act. The award of this standard validates that Lilly had implemented excellent processes for measuring and managing carbon and had demonstrated real and sustained energy efficiency improvements.

In 2013 Lilly achieved the target of sending zero waste to landfill. We actively promote waste recycling. We use food waste bins for composting and a wormery for composting of food waste from catering outlets and all other waste is used for energy recovery.

Green Travel
We encourage green travel and have ‘pool bikes’ that employees can use to travel to work, have created a central car sharing website for staff and offer a shuttle service at our sites in Basingstoke and Surrey to reduce carbon emissions.
