How We Do Business

Lilly's three core values – Integrity, Excellence, and Respect for People – guide us in all that we do. As the stewards of our company culture and reputation, HOW we do business is as important as WHAT we do.

For 140 years, we have approached our company’s business with a deep sense of responsibility to those we serve—patients, physicians and other healthcare providers, shareholders, suppliers, business partners, employees, and the local communities in which we operate.

As a leading pharmaceutical company, we look for answers to some of the world’s most urgent medical needs. We discover and develop products through rigorous testing and in accordance with the highest scientific and ethical standards. We strive to create products that fulfil the clinical promise of their Lilly label.

In addition, we have consistently sought to implement best governance practices. In the UK, we are governed by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) Code of Practice, which is administered by the Prescriptions Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA), as well as all laws, regulations and policies affecting our industry such as those of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

We are committed to excellence.  Our own company policies and procedures go above-and-beyond adherence to local laws and industry codes. We have established strict internal policies and procedures to ensure that every interaction with our stakeholders – whether they are healthcare providers, patient advocacy groups, government regulators, or patients – is conducted according to the highest ethical standards.

To support our culture of corporate compliance, Lilly has  a Business Ethics and Compliance Director, who is responsible for overseeing and enforcing our ethics and compliance programme in the UK. All Lilly employees receive mandatory training on the ethics and compliance policies related to their role, and disciplinary measures are in place should an employee break these policies.

To ensure our business transactions are beyond reproach, Lilly implemented an enhanced anti-corruption and transparency programme called Integrity in Business.

Lilly also operates a global Compliance and Ethics Hotline, staffed by a third party organisation, where employees can report any ethics or compliance concerns (anonymously if they prefer), 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
