Schizophrenia Condition Details

Schizophenia is one of the most devastating diseases known to mankind, affecting about one per cent of the population and striking people in the prime of their lives.

Symptoms of the disease are divided into two basic categories: positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, thought disorders, hostility and extreme suspiciousness. Negative symptoms are emotional and social withdrawal, difficulty in abstract thinking and extreme tiredness.

Schizophrenia usually strikes individuals in their late teens or early twenties, and it is usually a lifelong illness. It affects all races, cultures, social classes and both genders. Men usually develop symptoms earlier than women. With appropriate counselling and support, many people with schizophrenia are now able to achieve their twin goals of independance and employment.
