Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a systemic disease in which the density and the quality of bone are reduced, leading to increased risk of fracture. It is often called the ´silent epidemic´ because, for many of those affected, bone loss is gradual without any symptoms or warning signs. As the disease progresses, however, symptoms can include back pain and actual loss of height as a result of vertebral fractures.
The statistics of osteoporosis are truly impressive. One woman in every four over the age of 60 will break a bone and half of all women risk developing osteoporosis. More women die from the after-effects of osteoporotic fractures than from all cancers of the ovaries, cervix and uterus put together. Men fare better, but even so, one in twelve will suffer from osteoporosis after the age of 50.
Proper diet and exercise are important to help prevent osteoporosis and help in the treatment and there are also effective medications that your doctor or healthcare professional may prescribe for prevention and treatment.
