For more than a century we have been building on the commitment of the founding Lilly family to good corporate citizenship. This commitment is realised in several ways: through the contribution of medicines and money and through our active involvement in the communities in which we operate.

This ethos began with the help we gave to victims of the San Francisco earthquake in 1908 and has continued to this day, through the Lilly Foundation, with donations of over £5million in 2005 to help victims of the Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the Pakistan Earthquake.

From the earliest days in the UK, Lilly has played an active role in the local community, with a reference in the archives to a donation in 1940 of ‘a goodwill gift to the local hospital of a cooker and X-ray equipment’. This tradition continues with the company and individual employees supporting a wide range of business, community, educational and charitable projects. Read more in our community section.

We also know that we have a responsibility to help with unmet need in the developing world. Lilly has a heritage in tuberculosis, manufacturing two of the medicines used to treat multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and we have put together a partnership with the World Health Organisation, Harvard Business School and Purdue University in an innovative approach to help people who suffer from this condition.
