Lilly is founded as sole proprietorship in Indianapolis, Indiana by Colonel Eli Lilly.

1922

 

Lilly researchers collaborated with Frederick Banting and Charles Best of the University of Toronto to isolate and purify insulin, for the treatment of diabetes, at that time a fatal disease with no effective treatment. This resulted in Lilly introducing the world’s first insulin product in 1923.

1928

 

Lilly develops the first effective treatment for pernicious anaemia; the researchers share a Nobel prize.

1934

 

Lilly first overseas office was opened in London. From this moment on, the UK would become an important part of the overall Company’s strategy.

1939

 

Lilly´s first overseas manufacturing plant is opened at Basingstoke in the UK.

1943

 

Full scale production of Penicillin begins. This marked the beginning of many pioneering efforts in the field of infectious diseases.

1958

 

Lilly introduces vancomycin, still our last line of defence against serious hospital infections.

1964

 

The first cephalosporin product, KeflinTM, is launched.

1967

 

Lilly sets up its first research facility outside the US at Erl Wood Manor in the UK.

1974

 

Lilly receives the Queens Award for Trade in the UK

1982

 

Lilly introduces HumulinTM, the first human insulin product, also the world’s first biotechnology product using recombinant DNA technology.

1986

 

Launched a new class of medicines – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors – for the treatment of clinical depression, which has been used by more than 49 million people world-wide

1990

 

Lilly becomes the first pharmaceutical company to buy a supercomputer for use in simulating complex molecules in drug development.

1995

 

Lilly launches its anti-clotting drug ReoProTM  and HumalogTM, the first rapid-acting insulin analogue.

1996

 

Lilly introduces GemzarTM, the first new treatment for pancreatic cancer in decades, and Zyprexa for the treatment of schizophrenia. Lilly receives the Queen’s Award for Trade for the second time.

1998

 

Lilly introduces EvistaTM, its product for the prevention and treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis.

1999

 

Together with Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd., Lilly launches ActosTM, an oral diabetes agent.

2000

 

Lilly receives the Queen´s Award for Innovation and the Prix Galien for the discovery of ZyprexaTM.

2001

 

Lilly receives the Queen´s Award for Export for the third time

2002

 

Lilly launches XigrisTM  in the UK, the worlds first treatment specifically indicated for severe sepsis

2003

 

Lilly launched ForsteoTM  for severe osteoporosis in post menopausal women and CialisTM  for erectile dysfunction

2004

 

Lilly launched three new treatments: StratteraTM, the first non-stimulant for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents; YentreveTM, the first treatment for moderate and severe stress urinary incontinence in women; and AlimtaTM  the first treatment for mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Lilly launched CymbaltaTM  for depression

Lilly launched BYETTA®, the first in a new class of medicines known as incretin mimetics and used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (in conjunction with oral antidiabetic
therapy)
