Lilly is founded as sole proprietorship in
Indianapolis, Indiana by Colonel Eli Lilly.

Lilly researchers collaborated with Frederick Banting and Charles Best of the University of Toronto to isolate and purify insulin, for the treatment of diabetes, at that time a fatal disease with no effective treatment. This resulted in Lilly introducing the world’s first insulin product in 1923.

Lilly develops the first effective treatment for pernicious anaemia; the researchers share a Nobel prize.

1934

Lilly first overseas office was opened in London. From this moment on, the UK would become an important part of the overall Company’s strategy.

Lilly launched three new treatments: StratteraTM, the first non-stimulant for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents; YentreveTM, the first treatment for moderate and severe stress urinary incontinence in women; and AlimtaTM the first treatment for mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
